Up North Michigan
Castle Rock
Soaring hundreds of feet into the air, Castle Rock has been a land mark and a destination since the exploration of Michigan began. Located just a few miles north of the bridge, Castle Rock offers an unmatched view of the region and of the Les Cheneaux Islands.
I climbed this Michigan wonder when I was 6 years old. We had just crossed the Straits on the car ferry listening to the haunting sound of fog horns, the bridge was still under construction, and listened to the stories of Chief Pontiac using this same spot as a lookout or observation point.
You can still climb today and the Rock is still guarded by Paul Bunyan and Babe, the Blue Ox.
